Realities in Road Race Running Gear

There are certain realities runners must face when it comes to road race running gear. One of them would be; the most important investment a runner could invest in would be a good pair of running shoes, seconded with all other items essential in a road running excursion.

With various types of road race running gear out in the market, running shoes dominate the road race running gear item roster, making items like running shorts, socks and shirts appear as secondary to road race running shoes, though they are not necessarily such. It is easily understandable why the notion of road race running gear is sometimes perceived to be limited only to running shoes. Just know that road race running gear isn’t limited to footwear alone.

Shoes

Bottom line, it is the runner who decides what brand and/or model of running shoe would best suit him/her. As road race running gear, running shoes perform differently from tennis shoes, aerobics shoes and other athletic shoe types, like basketball shoes. They are specialized for running, and are built to provide ample support and safety to a runner’s feet and legs, leaving runners to focus on their running performance. Other shoe types provide levels of support for other-than-running related activities. Some weigh heavier, some provide support for areas not necessarily needing of support when running is talked about.

How a running shoe feels to a runner is basically the selling point of a running shoe. Expensive models are not necessarily the best, while moderately priced running shoes sometimes provide better performance support compared to expensive running shoe types.

Clothing/Running Apparel/Other Accessories

What a runner wears is basically up to the runner. The comfort of a runner comes paramount in the list of what to wear during a road running race. As road race running gear, running clothes are built to provide the level of comfort a runner demands from running clothes.

Road race running gear shorts come in various types, varying in lengths, colors, fabric material and aesthetic design styles. Some running shorts are built to be form fitting, while others are made loose. Personal preference basically dictates what the best type of running shorts there are. V-notch shorts are perhaps the most common of road race running gear shorts. These shorts feature an outside seam running through the length of the short’s length. The seam is notched in an upside-down, v-shaped formation once it reaches the seam’s end.

Compression shorts would be another entry into the road race running gear roster. They are basically undergarments made to provide support and comfort, particularly to male road race runners. They are made to be form-fitting, looking similarly like cycling shorts.

Road race running gear also includes support devices like heart-rate monitors, water containers/hydration devices, energy gels and on-person lights, for night runs. Road Race Running Gear Apparel come in cold or warm weather build designs, living up to the comfort preference of road race runners.

How to Choose Your Basic Running Gear

Here is a checklist on how to choose your basic running gear and not need to buy in order to run very comfortably. For those who might be thinking about how costly running can be, forget it! The truth is, one of the greatest things about running is how very few gear you need to buy. However, be careful when buying your running clothes because your running gear will spell the difference between a truly enjoyable run and a miserable one.

Choose the Right Kind of Shoes

First, you will need to buy a good pair of shoes. They need not be expensive for as long as they give your feet and legs the comfort they need. The shoes do not have to be so nicely-decorated with lights, or whistles, or even bells…What a runner will need is a decent pair of shoes to sustain him through long and totally tedious runs.

Never decide to go for tennis shoes or the old pair of sneakers you had a few years ago. They just won’t do. What you need to run effectively are fresh and well-supported shoes that have the perfect fit and that match your type of feet and way of walking. This is very important because as a beginner in running, your feet will have to get all he protection they need while you run. Believe me, I had to have a two months injury break because of shin splints!

Choose Comfortable Running Gear

Nike Dri-Fit Filament Short Running GearThe key in running is being comfortable. You should not only be comfortable with how you keep your pacing while running, but most importantly with how you are dressed. Most of the time, excited beginner runners tend to overdress themselves that their running gear become uncomfortable for them. And of course, this will lead to running unsuccessfully and not finishing at your target time.

Steer Clear From Cotton Tee-Shirts

So choose comfortable clothes for running. Steer clear of cotton shirts since they are absorbent and therefore easily soak up all perspiration, retaining all the sweat and moisture in the shirt, and worse, the body smell as well. If you noticed, cotton Tee-shirts are unevenly stitched and this is believed to cause chafing or even some bleeding in severe cases. So instead of using cotton shirts for running, it might be best if you go for running clothes manufactured with materials that have the ability to wick sweat away from the runner’s skin.

Choose the Right Running Clothes for the Season

The runner’s decision of what to wear will always indicate the outcome of his run for that particular day. That is why it is very important to check the weather conditions for the day before deciding what to wear before running. Bear in mind that you will never need to stop just because it is winter or because it is raining hard, or whatever. You can always enjoy running even at winter by simply layering your clothes. All you need to do is find the right mix of clothing for the appropriate season.

For example if it is going to be a hot day, decide on wearing clothes with lesser layers. Otherwise, if you put on so many layers, you will feel warmer or hotter. Bear in mind not to use the cotton fabric as they will make the runner extremely hot causing her to sweat excessively. Truly, the running gear you wear will have a great impact on the way you run, not to mention your attitude in running.

Beginning Running Tips

One of today’s popular sports is distance running. This popularity could be attributed to the fact that the sport does not require much in terms of gears (running clothes and shoes) and in terms of athletic qualifications (you just have to know how to run).

The Beginning

You may have read and known from people that distance running promotes good health, is fun, and can be a source of popularity if you have a talent for long races. There are other good reasons for training to be a distance runner. The reality though is that distance running is hard.

The first hurdle is your mind. An untrained body will resist any exercise. Breathing is hard, the muscles ache. You get tired. All reasons are there for you to stop. With a tough mental attitude, you can continue and overcome them.

The Secret? Start Slow.

You may find your lungs will complain at first. But as you continue, the breathing eases up. The stiff and sore muscles eventually relax. This is the ‘second wind’. Keep the pace slow at first. You are not just training, but building your muscle strength as well.

First, pick a distance not far and not too long either. Of course, first runs are always disastrous, or so you may think. Do the runs three to five times a week, with rests in between. Then, you can progress on your own, or with a running consultant. Running with a companion makes it more fun, too.

Gear

Your sports store clerk can help you choose your clothes. More important though are good shoes. They should be made for running, must fit well, and do not cause injuries.

Avoid “black toes”, those bruised toenails common to runners. Pick a shoe size with about a thumb’s space between your toe and the shoe’s end. If there is heel slippage, experiment till you get the correct one.

Food

Distance running needs specific nutrition. Carbohydrates are on top of the list. These are for stocking glycogen needed for strength and endurance. A good helping in proteins would be needed too if your body still need to build strong muscles.

Distance runners must have carbohydrates during the run. (Carbohydrates drinks are now available.) Lack of carbohydrates results in low blood sugar and low muscle glycogen which would weaken endurance leading to muscle fatigue.

Water, lots of it, is also needed all the way. Make it a habit to drink fluids (water and those power drinks) every 10 to 15 minutes, notwithstanding whether you are thirsty or not. Body fluids are constantly depleted, dissipated via sweat as you run.

Endurance

When you become strong and comfortable with your running, you may want to increase the distance. Do it gradually. The rule is to increase not more than 10% every week.

You may begin increasing your speed, too, if you reach two miles. This is the time where you can set long-term goals. Goals will help improve your game and keep you going.

Your final goal might be running long distances or whatever are your ambitions. The very important aspect to remember is to go for that goal one easy step at a time, and the slower the better.

You have to pace your mind with your body. Bodies are different from person to person.

Training Log

Aside from a good pair of running shoes, another valuable tool is a detailed training log. There are examples on how to do this everywhere. The important thing is that you record all the details of your running (pulse rates, distances covered, rest days, dates of changes in anything, comments on being tired or achy, etc.)

The log is for your review as well as for planning future activities, based on all the details in front of you.

The Log is Done Daily.

These are some of the general things to keep in mind if you decide to do distance running. The details you will discover later as you go – from friends and coaches, from magazines, books and the internet. The most important thing is that you are already in it and enjoying yourself.

Women’s Running Apparel

Women’s Running Apparel

BrooksRunning.com - Free Shipping Over $75Women runners are often featured sporting branded sports apparel and gears—from wristbands and socks to water bottles and sunglasses. And so many women who engage or aspire to engage in distance running follow suit and go shopping for similar running wear. Others, on the other hand, simply ignore such sports apparels and dismiss them as mere brand promotions and sports fashionistas’ whims.

Well, those may be true. Some may wear distance running apparels merely for fashion, while some for sponsorship. But one thing’s certain: those apparels aren’t worn by athletes just for those reasons. A high performance athlete wouldn’t just throw on anything that first comes to hand in her closet. That’s because distance running apparels are specially tailored to serve various purposes.

First, there’s the “no cotton” general rule. This is what runners, and even athletes in other sports, follow—from their head band down to their socks. While cotton fabrics may be really comfortable to wear (and most clothing companies advertise their products as “100 percent made of cotton for your comfort”), it’s not actually that popular when it comes to sports wear. That’s because cotton is absorbent. And so when you sweat, the cotton cloth absorbs it. But while it’s a good thing that sweat won’t come trickling down your body, the down side is that the sweat doesn’t dry up easily and stays on the cotton cloth, making you feeling wet nonetheless. And wetness, as you know, may make you feel cold even during a summer run.

What sports apparel makers use instead are fabrics made of wick fibers. Such cloths wick, or draw away, sweat from the skin. And because moisture is pulled from the skin to the exterior fibers of such fabrics, you stay dry and warm even as the moisture on the cloth slowly dries up. Examples of such special fabrics are silk, Cool Max, Thermax, polypropolene, Thinsulate, and DryFit.

But aside from their sweat wicking feature, these fabrics are also lightweight and stretchable. They’re made to be super stretchable so that they’d fit your body like a second skin and cover as many sweating pores as possible. And they weigh far much lighter than similar clothes of ordinary fabrics, so you would be able to run with the least added weight to your body. Plus, their lightness allows you to wear about two or three layers of clothing for long distance runs during cold seasons.

Now, after the cloths, what about the clothes? For underwear, you should wear bras and panties that give you utmost comfort—the primary consideration when it comes to any sports wear. Both should have wide hems that are preferably located on the outside, so they wouldn’t chafe your skin during the run. For underpants, don’t choose flimsy ones that might gradually slide down your butt. Get ones that comfortably hugs your buttocks and hips. And whether you got small or big breasts, your bra should be just right as to provide enough support and breast bounce control without suffocating or making you feel uncomfortably bound.

Distance running apparel need not be expensive and branded. There are many local and online stores that offer affordable sports wear. So, whether you’re seriously into distance running and planning to become the next Deena Kastor, or you simply want to run miles to melt the flabs away, you better get yourself some proper running apparel.

Basic Men’s Running Apparel

Many men enjoy running as a form of exercise. To be comfortable and safe, they wear some basic men’s running apparel. Unlike women though, men do not need a lot of special apparel.

The most important piece of men’s running apparel is a pair of good running shoes. Not only do running shoes offer comfort during the exercise, they also reduce the risk of sprains and stress. It is best to consult with an experienced runner or the staff of a store specializing in running apparel regarding the right shoes.

A cotton t-shirt, long sleeved shirt or tank top usually comprise the top garments. For basic men’s running apparel, cotton tops are preferred because they are cheap and they absorb sweat. The bad thing about this is that the sweat dries up very slowly. This makes the garment heavy. Since the garment is wet, the runner sometimes feels cold, especially if he runs on windy or cool days.

Shorts, jogging pants or tights comprise the lower garments. Shorts and jogging pants are usually baggy and loose to allow greater movement. Many men also prefer tights. They allow the greatest movement possible.

Recently, a new kind of garments collectively known as technical apparel is gaining popularity. The lightweight, stretchable fabrics used for these garments are far superior to cotton. They wick away sweat. This means that sweat passes through the fabric and stays outside where it is absorbed through evaporation. This feature allows the fabric to dry faster, thus keeping the runner warm.

Although not a piece of garment designed for men’s running apparel, some male runners wear athletic supports, popularly known as jockstraps. A jockstrap typically consists of an elastic waistband with a with a support pouch. Two straps extend from the base of the pouch around the buttocks which is attached to the waistband. The pouch, which can be fitted with a plastic protective cup, can protect vital sex organs, particularly the testicles, from injury if ever a runner falls or if something hits these sensitive organs.

During cold weather, male runners don on extra garments to protect themselves from the cold air. These men’s running apparel includes jackets, ponchos and windbreakers. These garments form the outer layer of multi layered clothing. So, whenever a runner feels hot during cold days, he can just remove the outer layer.
Aside from these essentials, men also wear other apparel that makes them comfortable. For example, sweatbands worn on the head prevent sweat from dripping to their eyes. Elbow and knee padding prevent scrapes and scratches if they accidentally fall down on the pavement.

When buying men’s running apparel, do not get the cheapest. Get the average or the best. Your money will be worth it.

Miscellaneous Women’s Running Gears

There are a lot of female runners around the world. Due to their physiology and psychology, women need special gear for this sport and exercise. These gears address a woman’s need for functionality, physical support, practicality and aesthetic beauty.

One of the most basic women’s running gear is a headband. This is especially useful if the woman has long hair. The headband keeps her hair away from her face and eyes. It also soaks up the sweat that forms on the woman’s scalp and forehead. A headband can either be plain or fancy. It is a very simple but useful gear.

Another useful women’s running gear is a sports holster. This gear is somewhat like a vest which fits a woman’s upper torso. It features straps and pockets. These straps and pockets hold things together like water bottles, cell phones, players and loose change. The vest has a very snug fit, which means that every movement is possible and won’t be hampered. The vest is also very lightweight and comfortable which means it would not add to a runner’s stress.

But sports holsters can only hold small things. What about if a woman wants to bring extra clothes, towels or ready-to-eat meals? For this, she will need another simple woman’s running gear, which is a backpack. Backpacks make great and convenient compartments for putting much larger things.

The problem with backpacks though is that they tend to bounce along when the woman runs. So, some manufacturers, made the Ransack. This women’s running gear is a special backpack wherein the shoulder straps are eliminated from the design. The Ransack also has a vest-like design. This allows the Ransack to be worn as a sleeveless jacket. In essence, it is a backpack and a jacket at the same time!

Many women, especially mothers, like to take their babies along when they do their running exercise. But even with personal baby carriers, it is impractical to carry a baby on the shoulders or on the back. The baby’s extra weight would take its toll on the runner.

For those who have babies, jogging strollers are offered as part of a woman’s running gear. The baby would be placed in the stroller while the woman pushes it in front of her while running. To reduce the infant’s discomfort, jogging strollers have special suspensions in its wheels. Most strollers also have storage spaces below the infant compartments. This allows the woman to put her things and the stuff that the baby needs without having to hamper her load.

With these pieces of equipment, a woman can surely enjoy running safely and comfortably.

Men’s Running Gears

When men’s running gear is the subject of a conversation, shoes instantly come into mind. Sneakers, tennis shoes, running shoes, sport shoes, or gym shoes, their names may vary, but the point of the matter is, many associate the term “men’s running gear “with shoes.

Men’s running gear isn’t solely limited to simply running shoe types and athletic shoe brands. They include athletic apparel as well as safety equipment for runners. These days, one could even include portable music players, though these items aren’t necessarily categorized to be part of the men’s running gear line. Specialized accessories geared to take pulse rate readings could also be listed as an item of men’s running gear status.

The most popular when it comes to men’s running gear apparel involves the Dri-Fit fabric. International standard bearers of athletic gears like Nike, Reebok and Adidas utilize Dri-Fit as their material of choice for men’s running gear shirts, shorts, jogging pants and windbreakers.

The overall concept of the Dri-Fit fabric is simple. The fabric quickly removes moisture from the body, being a highly absorbent breed of fabric. It dries up fast, leaving wearers comfortable, letting athletes focus on the immediate matter, or matters, they need to focus on.

Most makers of men’s running gear integrate “safety devices” into their products. For example, reflective materials are integrated into shirts, or shorts, or shoes. These reflective materials stand as “signal beacons” once a light source touches them making them ideal for early morning joggers, making motorists aware of their presence on the road.

These days, most men’s running gear makers embrace the concept of integration, which is basically the buzzword of the times. Take cellular phones integrated with digital camera capabilities, for example. The principle of integration hasn’t eluded men’s running gear, and the best example of such integration comes in the form of Athleisure shoes.

Athleisure shoes are pretty much “all-around” shoes, designed to be acceptable footwear for the office, as well as for minor athletic activities. They aren’t exactly the best type of shoe for high-endurance running, but are quite ideal for short running errands and brisk walking.

While specialized men’s running gear shoes are designed for high-endurance running, athleisure shoes boast a minor fraction of running shoes’ running support features. But what they lack in running support, they make up for when it comes to where they are acceptable to be worn.

All in all, the stereotype of men’s running gear simply being limited to shoes isn’t exactly right. Though running shoes do mostly comprise the bulk, other items are available, integrated with various safety features.

These days, the lifestyles of men are considered, and men’s running gears integrated to be functional items are out in the market.

Dressing Up For Running

Running, one of the world’s most popular sports, is actually the most ideal of them all. What makes it ideal is the fact that it is a very simple, healthy kind of sport and that it does not entail buying any expensive gear at all.

The benefits are the same but the investment needed is so low. With just the basics (clothing and a sturdy pair of shoes), one can simply get up and run.

Other sports need some very expensive sets of equipments (golf, rock climbing), while others need an organization for one to be able to join (basketball, football).

Running Shoes

The most important piece of equipment for a runner is a good pair of running shoes. Quality is important because it avoids injuries and gives comfort while running.

For newcomers who are not savvy enough about running shoes, the best places to go to are stores that specialize in selling running shoes.

(Some athletic equipment stores are also big enough to carry a wide selection of these shoes. They are the second best ones after these shoe specialty stores, in case there are none in your area.)

Shoe specialty stores have clerks that are very knowledgeable about their only wares. Sometimes, these stores videotape their customers running on a treadmill first. This is to check on the customers’ running styles before making any suggestions.

After making suggestions, the sales person may ask the customer to run in each of the candidate pairs to further determine what pair is best. (Of course, the customer will pick his preference according to what feels most comfortable.)

Socks are also recommended because they are part of the running gear. Socks that do not fit properly or are not designed for running can cause blisters and other foot injuries.

Running Clothes

A runner should also invest in quality clothing fit for the season. Shorts or pants, shirts in short and long sleeves and with the right thickness should be carefully matched for each season that the runner intends to run.

Clothes which can wick moisture away from the runner’s skin can help keep the runner cool and dry.

The Light of Running Safety Gear

The Light of Running Safety Gear

Brooks Nightlife Reflective Vest, Nightlife, Large/X-Large
Running is a great form of exercise. It boosts cardiovascular capacity, as well as provides the body with an overall workout. Running also develops a sense of discipline, dedication and determination, qualities essential to any person living today.

In a sense, running doesn’t only keep one’s body fit, the act somewhat develops a sharper, more disciplined mind.

Athletic gear manufactures come up with an assortment of running gear for runners to pick from, depending on what runners’ need. From specialized running shoes, to Dri-Fit apparel, the varieties of available running gear range from shoes with extra ankle support, to pulse rate readers, making runners aware of how much pressure their putting their bodies into.

Athletic gear manufacturers also consider the safety of runners, thus the popularity of running safety gear.

Running safety gear is oftentimes associated with reflective gear. Most running safety gear utilize reflectors which shine upon contact with a light source. They are ideal for early morning runners, making motorists aware of their presence on the road, thus avoiding road related accidents. But running safety gear isn’t simply limited to reflectors, though reflectors do play a major role.

Wrist mounted whistles, made out of reflective fabrics, would be good examples. These running safety gear items have saved runners from potential muggers countless times. A similar running safety gear item would be wrist mounted personal alarms, which produce louder noise once triggered. As muggers don’t want to attract attention, a wrist mounted whistle, or wrist mounted personal alarm stand as deterrents to mugging incidents.

A more “physical” version of wrist mounted alarms, would be wrist holsters for pepper spray canisters. As a running safety gear, these holsters provide runners an option when it comes to defending themselves against muggers. One just can not predict what one would encounter during a run, thus the value of being prepared.

GPS enabled watches, are another category in running safety gear. Getting lost during a run could escalate to be a threat to a runner’s safety, and having a GPS enabled watch avoids such incidents. Most GPS enabled watches designed for runners have built in heart rate meters, which also prove to be quite useful to runners. Shoe wallets, ankle wallets or wrist wallets also comprise another category in running safety gear. These items aren’t necessarily made just to hold one’s money, but other items could be stored inside them as well.

Asthmatics could put their puffers in these items, in case an asthma attack kicks in. Cellular phones, small as they come nowadays, could also be put in these wallets, and would come handy in case of emergencies.

The purpose of running safety gear is self explanatory. Their value is no different.

Safety Reminders When Running Training During Nighttime

If you are the type of runner who is more comfortable running and taking your running training during the early evening rather than in the early morning or afternoon, then you are the type of runner who should heed more to safety reminders.

Wear Very Reflective Gear

Rule number one, when running training during nighttime, make sure to always wear reflective clothes or gear up with anything reflective. Also, you should always go against the traffic flow so instead of the cars being behind you, you will be facing them and therefore, you will see all cars coming towards you. That will surely be a good precaution measure to avoid accidents and getting ran over.

Wear the Right Running Shoes

If you are starting out with your running training during nighttime and you are the type to possess low arches and at the same time have the excessive-inward-foot movement, then it might be best if you choose to buy the straight lasted type of shoes. For the runner who has high arches and has the tendency to do outward foot motion excessively, then the curved lasted shoes are better.

Gadgets to Guarantee Night Visibility

When running training at nighttime, always make sure to wear a safety light worn on the waist or on the arms. These are available in colors red or clear light and some even features a flashing signal option which will really make you visible to all motorists and therefore, avoid accidents or injuries.

Be Alert Where You Are Heading

While it is very dark running during nighttime, the best way to combat accidents is caution. Avoid having shin splints or that forceful crash of your heel against the road. This may cause your joints and feet to want less and less to touch the ground and eventually, may lead to injury.

And should you get injured while running training at nighttime, the very first thing you must do is rest to prevent additional injury to happen. Immediately apply ice if there is any, and elevate injured part to reduce swelling and therefore, prevent build-up of fluids in the tissues. Always take your rest to avoid getting too fatigued.

Experiencing Fatigue and Soreness is Normal

Yes, nighttime running can also be a source of stress or fatigue for the runner. And this fatigue may be attributed to the fact that there is anticipation on the part of the runner to watch out for all the vehicles coming; not to mention the anxiety of avoiding and having to dread injuries or accidents to happen. And these give most runners an experience of soreness.

And when runners disregard the body signals their body is sending them, yes, fatigue sets in. However, there are ways of avoiding fatigue and soreness and one of which is do not overstress yourself. Putting yourself to too much fatigue, which includes running at nighttime in a busy street of so many motorists, will really reap sore muscles and painful joints as well. And so, should you experience this sharp pain, it would be wise to rest and immediately see a coach or physician before getting back to your running training program.

Running Uphill at Nighttime

Yes, as they always say, the hills are and will always be a runner’s friends, but not so much especially when it is nighttime. Running uphill during your weekly training is guaranteed to make your legs as well as your ankles stronger. However, doing it at a nighttime might pose more serious threats than getting your ankles stronger. So, if you plan to run uphill, make sure it is during morning or early in the afternoon instead.

If your running tracks are without any visible hills, then it would be best to just drop by a gym and do your running training indoors, use the treadmill there, or simply run some flights of stairs to imitate running uphill.
